About this Program
Where a factory goes and who lives next to it is a land use decision, and land use decides health outcomes for frontline communities.
When General Iron's metal shredding operation was pushed out of a wealthy, mostly white neighborhood, the plan was to move it to the Southeast Side, onto communities already carrying more pollution than the rest of the city. People for Community Recovery and Southeast Environmental Task Force led the fight against it. That pattern is the work: stopping the transfer of harm from neighborhoods with power to neighborhoods without it.
We build resilience so residents have a real say in what gets built next to their homes.
