A STATEMENT FROM THE CHICAGO ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE NETWORK

The Chicago Environmental Justice Network condemns the actions of protesters who physically attacked Julia Ramirez, 12th Ward Alderperson, and her staff.

On Thursday, Oct. 19th, residents protested the siting of a tent city on 38th & California on an industrial site in an industrial corridor.  Many protesters, fueled by misinformation and organizations, yelled racist, hurtful, and untruthful things.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time, nor will it be the last time, we face a division amongst marginalized communities instilled by hate, fear, and lack of resources.  This protest, combined with the historical disinvestment in our communities and lack of transparency, stoked violence.

While we agree there are many valid reasons to oppose GardaWorld, including their abusive track record, attacking and promoting a xenophobic narrative is not the answer. The violence directed at Alderwoman Julia Ramirez, her staff person, and any others impacted yesterday should never be a response.

We stand with Aderwoman Julia Ramirez, her staff, and our communities in engaging with the city to find long-term solutions, recognizing that there is no easy fix.  Still, we are committed to ensuring Chicago can continue welcoming new arrivals and ensuring our communities have the resources they need to lead healthy and sustainable lives in an environment that nurtures and cares for everyone's well-being.
