People for Community Recovery
People for Community Recovery is based in Altgeld Gardens public housing community on Chicago’s far southside. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of residents affected by environmental pollution. PCR was founded in 1979 by Hazel Johnson, known internationally as the mother of the environmental justice movement thanks to her work both locally organizing for better conditions in Altgeld Gardens and internationally raising awareness about environmental racism. Today, PCR continues Hazel’s legacy by building power towards equity and community self-determination. Our work is led by public housing and low-income residents of the far southside. We advocate, educate, and organize on community-identified priorities including environmental and climate justice, safe and affordable housing, economic equity and community health.
